Wheels up at 9:58 EST from Dulles International Airport and eight hours later we landed in Frankfurt at 11:50 local time. No complaints about the flight, except for the fact that my TV didn’t work. Nevertheless, I slept through most of it and arrived relatively refreshed.
On a quick side-note we also had a enthralling conversation on the plane about different methods to avoid jet lag. Personally, I believe the most important is to sleep! Of course not during the middle of the day. When in Rome do as the Romans do. In other words, when the Romans sleep, sleep as well. I only bring this up because someone suggested that the best way to avoid jet lag is to not sleep at all during the nights preceding your trip, so that when you decide to sleep you just crash. There is a grain of truth here, but the implementation is a little extreme. Ultimately, this method only adds to your sleep deficit and you are grumpy. We also talked about melatonin and other sleep aids. I mentioned these sort of pills and medications in a previous blog post here.
When we arrived in Frankfurt, a horde of AFS Germany volunteers met us and quickly and efficiently directed us each to our connecting train. They had plenty of food and drink for us and you could tell that they have done this before.
I took the ICE to Hanover and after 30 hours of non-stop travel met my host family!
Check out my feeble attempt to map my journey.
